Nearly to the Top this Time!!!!

We went back to Gran and Granpops at the weekend, this time to get to the top of The Stiperstones.
Of course dad had to have a cup of tea, a sandwich, and do the crossword before we set off.
He's doing the small one on the other side, if he started on the big one you can see we'd be here all week!
Look Grans got a photo of me when I was a pup, on the window sill

Just checking Gran's making the sandwich how dad like its, she don't look like this without a head, but shes like mom don't liked to be photographed. If only I could grow a couple more inches I could counter surf.

Dad took that long trying to finish it that me and  Dougall had time to make up, the last time we met he was being a right pain in the butt fuzz.

That's where we're going right to the top, time for a quick zoomie around one of Granpops fields, I now know that this was a silly thing to do, when I've got a 3mile walk to come!!

Now if you don't know, mom is the worlds worst at map reading, in this case that's OK we don't need a map you can see the route to go, its not to hard, that's the bit that you can easy walk though the heather. Oh no Dads up for going the most direct route, this started off fine, the heather and the billberry bushes being quite low, but the higher we go the bigger they get, All I can hear behind me is mom whinging, "we should have followed the foot path" and " there could be Adder's under here"  and "if George gets any ticks on him I won't be happy" and "he's to small to jump over the heather" " Mom Please, give it a rest!!"

We carried on but in the end I'd had enough of heather and windberries going in me eye's, and they were to big for me to jump over, so dad came to the rescue and picked me up. Thanks Dad moms still behind yacking on "I told you so, next time we go up the path"
This the closest to the top we got, I'm not pushing my luck, might break a leg going up there.
(don't know the bloke on the top, we was waiting for him to move,
but them his mate joined him, he messed up me photo!!!)

There's rocks all along the top

"Mom pack it in, no butt shots please!! and that includes Dad"

This part of the rocks is called The Devil's Chair, more about that later.

It was quite misty on the day we went.

This is some rocks that I could get to the top.

Back down to the farm for food

Now I don't know want had happened in the time we had been away, but Dougall true to form had a cob on, he is one moody doxie!!! can you see the face.

Anyway at dinner I sat nice and quiet under the table, while he's yapping his head off at me!! so Gran put him in the dog house to calm down (that's the back hall to you and me) its got a kitty flap, he could jump though it if he wanted, I'm not sure if he is that intelligent!

Oh I forgot to tell you the story of the stones

This is just one version of the folk law

The story goes that two great dragons, one red and one white fought a terrible battle over the lonely forests and bogs of south Shropshire and were seen in a dream by the great enchanter Merlin. Finally, locked in the embrace of death, they fell to earth and became the mountain ridges of the Stiperstones and the Long Mynd.
This bit of text was taken from this web site,
which all so has some nice photos of the stones, it is a bit of a spooky place

Granpops version is as follows, he was told this at school all those years ago, so I'm going with this one.

A Giant was carring stones in his apron all the way from Pulverbatch,
when he got to the hill the apron strings broke, he said blow it (Granpops used stronger words than this,  I'm sure they didn't use them words long ago) , and left them there,
which is where they are to this day.

See Yea George xxx

What fantastic photos! Blog Mom says she needs to come back after work and take some time to enjoy the scenery properly. But we both think that the top one looks like a Norman Rockwell painting. Blog Mom says she can see that on the cover of a Saturday Evening Post circa 1959 or something like that. We don't know how that tranlates on the other side of the Atlantic or for humans who aren't that old, but we love it.

lotsa licks, Lola

Oh my Cats George,
You and Dougall are a pair. Mom and I cracked up at you on the couch about to give Dougall a head pop. That is one great feline move for a K9.
Don't take him too seriously he is a Doxie and they like to rule. Remember good manners win each time. Great outdoors pictures too we so enjoyed them,

We have finally added you to our bloglist so we won't be missing your posts. Thanks for all the visits to our blog.

Hey George - I just returned from my visiting my grandparents, too! I love traveling don't you! That was quite a hike you went on - looks like were at the top of the world.

I like that story (both the legend and your grandpa's version). I think I will check out that website.

P.S.: My mom doesn't like getting her picture taken either! Isn't that silly!

Hi there George!! I see we are not the first felines to visit you seeing that Madi and her Mom are friends of yours... We both think that you are a very, very handsome dog. In fact, our dad has always loved dogs like you. We really like that first picture of you watchin' your dad do the x-word puzzle...you are funny! And the picture where you are ready to bop Dougall dog!! hahaha!! Personally, I'm with Madi, you were in excellent cat form there on the couch!! Myself, I don't do much o' the boppin', but I sure get bopped a lot by Tiny...she's the queen/boss/law/master bopper in our house, but that doesn't mean I don't give her any guff....I love to mess with her mind!! Haha!! I heard our Mom and Dad talking about getting an Irish Terrier...looks a lot like you but no black. Dad's brother has 2 Irish Terriers and they are nice. We like the pictures from your walk....wow, what a walk!! We would NEVER have survived that!! We could have climbed the rocks, but the rest woulda just pooped us out. We are, afterall, Senior kitties!!! We are now following you so that we can keep up with the trouble you get into or stay out of!! Purrs, Lautrec and Tiny (Weezdabadcats) P.S. Mom says thanks for following her door blog (The Door Hunter)!

I can see that you're so happy going off into those beautiful fields of green!!

Don't worry. My mom doesn't like her pictures taken either AND she's terrible at map reading!

We're glad to see ya back, George. Back from Chicago and the wedding. And back from the tip top of the stones. We noticed you took the path on the way back. Smart thinking on someone's part!

Those were some mighty pretty pictures. 'Specially liked the heather. And the stories of the stones. They send Moma off into a fantasy land, which means we get to cuddle up next to her and get some lovin.

We woke up to weather a lot like your misty day hike. Unusual for us. And it won't last long. But maybe. Just maybe. This post has inspired Moma to take us on an early fall hike of our own.

Paws crossed

What a beautiful hike. You did well to get as high up the rocks as you did. We don't have heather around here, at least not in this part of New York.

Hi George - so you think that creature was a mink? We weren't sure whether it was an otter or a mink. Wrigley probably knew, but he didn't seem to care what it was ...

Such cool stories! And your mom is funny! LOL!

I've said it before and I will say it again, I love this blog!

The purple heather is something out of fairy tale. And that one picture of a tree looks like a painting. To me, the mist gives the pictures a fantasy appearance. Absolutely beautiful!
